SVA Events of The Year for 2018

Events and activities of 2018.

In March 2018 the SVA facilitated a neighbourhood drop in session at the Pioneer Museum for residents and business owners to indicate their priorities for Saanichton Village in the future. Shortly after, a survey was sent out in order to hear from more people. The crosswalk by the post office was one suggestion. This has been completed and gets considerable use making it much safer for pedestrians to cross East Saanich Road. The Municipality is now moving forward on a future vision for Saanichton.

The SVA’s current major project is the Bike ‘n’ Ride. The concept is a bike storage and repair area for cyclists to utilize in our village core. It will be located in the small park at the end of Lisnoe Avenue and close to Fresh Cup Coffee Shop. Presently the SVA is at the fundraising stage with this project.

In August, the SVA hosted Family Day at the Saanich Fair Grounds and was one of the sponsors of the Centennial Park Outdoor Summer Movie as well as volunteering at the movie. In December we hosted the Christmas Tree Trail Event . These events contribute to a great community for families. Our events would not be possible without our member support.

Other activities the SVA is involved with are a monthly knitting group and a walking group. The knitting group meets the last Saturday of the month at 1:00 pm at the Pioneer Museum. It is open to beginner and experienced knitters. Some bring spinning wheels to do some spinning. Patterns, ideas and just good social talk is enjoyed. Some just come for the social time and to see what others have been working on. In the cooler months the fire is going in the large fireplace, tea is made and usually a variety of treats are put out for all to enjoy.

On the third Tuesday of the month a group of walkers meet at 9 a.m. at Spelt’s Coffee Shop and do a walk around the community. The walk is moderate and is about one hour. Both activities are opportunities to meet, share and to to get to know each other and the community a little better. Both are open to anyone wanting to take part.

Our AGM is February 6th at the Pioneer Museum at 6:30 pm with guest speakers, Doug and/or Bear LaFortune. They will be speaking about the Welcome Totems at the entrances to Saanichton Village.

On March 6th we will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner at St. Mary’s church. Tickets ($15 per person) will be on sale at Fresh Cup and SeaFirst Insurance. Look for more information about the dinner in the coming months.

The SVA board is comprised of business owners and residential members. We always welcome new members and appreciate having volunteers help at our events. If you know of someone who would be interested in joining the SVA please pass on the contact information to them. Residential membership is just $10 a year.
